In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of major explosions rocking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately offer additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Events
This event occurs against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Major developments preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with further updates expected as events unfold.
