The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.
The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
