Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
