Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
